Auburn Connects! Common Book Program
John Laaman graduated from Auburn University in 2016 with a PhD in history. His research focuses on the intersection of religion and peace and how these concepts connect to the state. His dissertation, "Unpopular Views of Peace: The Great War and the Transformation of Southern Religion," investigated southern churches' changing stances on peace in the midst of wartime pressures.
Typical for historians, John enjoys spending time in scholarly books and articles, but does not discriminate against general non-fiction or novels. The ability to combine professional and personal interests is one of his favorite aspects of coordinating the Common Book program. In addition to his work in the program, he teaches U.S. and world history courses, both in traditional classes as well as classes for international students in Auburn Global.
